Validation of your Brazilian diploma in the United States
It all starts here. Before anything else, you need to prove that your Brazilian nursing degree is equivalent to your American degree. This analysis is carried out by TruMerit (formerly CGFNS) or Josef Silny & Associates, the two evaluation agencies recognized by the Boards of Nursing in the U.S.
They check your diploma, academic record and clinical workload, and issue an official report called the Credential Evaluation Report (CES Report). This report is the key that opens all the doors that follow. Without it, no Board accepts your application.
Where things tend to get stuck
Most nurses who try it alone get stuck at this stage. Not because it's impossible, but because the details are relentless. The forms are in technical English. The agency requires documents in very specific formats. Your school needs to send your transcript directly to the agency, and many Brazilian schools simply don't know how to do this (or take weeks to respond). COREN needs to issue documentation to the correct standard. And any formatting error or incomplete information could mean weeks or months of delays.

Board of Nursing
State licensing and issuance of Authorization to Test (ATT)
With your diploma validated, the next step is to apply for a professional license in the American state where you want to work. Each state has its Board of Nursing (the equivalent of COREN in Brazil), and it is this body that issues your license. The application includes sending the CES Report, a criminal background check and collecting fingerprints.
When everything is approved, the Board issues the Authorization to Test (ATT): the document that authorizes you to take the NCLEX exam. It is the home stretch of the bureaucratic part.
Why choosing the state is a strategic decision
This is one of the points where Nursy's experience makes the most difference. Each Board has its own requirements, different processing times and particularities that only those who have worked with dozens of states know. One state may process in 6 weeks, another may take 4 months. Some are more flexible with international nurses, others require additional documentation.

The NCLEX is the United States' national nursing exam, administered by Pearson VUE in English. It is the last step before licensing. And here's the crux: you don't need to wait for the ATT to start studying. In fact, nurses who organize themselves to study in parallel with the bureaucratic stages save months in the total process.

In Brazil, the NCLEX is held in the city of São Paulo, at an official Pearson VUE test center. Approval depends on your individual preparation, which is why the sooner you start studying, the better.
